Other

Other - please specify:Previous studies (CARITAS - Higher Vocational School of Social Sciences Olomouc, UPOL) - experience of older students.

Can you describe the role you held during your internship? My position was not fixed. It was based on my preferences, skills and the current needs of the organization.

What specific responsibilities and tasks did you do during your internship?1. Help with direct childcare and daily household chores
2. Conducting lessons and assisting with school tutoring (assisting with tutoring a small group of preschoolers; preparing and conducting English and computer lessons for older children - including implementing topics and activities focusing on building resilience)
3. Accompanying children (to church, to hospital appointments, on school trips,...)
4. Occasional help with minor administrative tasks (filling out forms, filing materials in folders, scanning documents, ...)
5. Creating and repairing teaching materials (creating posters, repairing damaged books, rewriting papers for reading practice)

Did your tasks align with the pre-defined conditions?yes

Did the internship meet your expectations?yes

Did you apply any theory you learned at university during the internship?yes

If yes, can you provide a specific example?I used mainly theory related to social work with families and foster care, as well as the concepts of well-being, resilience, intercultural competence and reflexivity.

How well did you manage to communicate in a foreign language?almost no difficulties

Did the institution have any special requirements?Other

Other - please specify:Age - min. 18 years, criminal record, willingness to adapt to the local culture, enthusiasm for working with children, physical and mental stamina, patience, flexibility.

Do you have tips on how to make a great impression on the institution?Previous experience working with children may be an advantage.

How competitive was the selection process? Did you have to go through an application procedure?I think the complaint is primarily whether the organization has room for an intern in a given term. So to increase the chances, it is a good idea to start planning the internship as early as possible.

Why would you recommend students do an internship?Karibu Nyumbani is an amazing organization where students can try working in a very different cultural environment than ours. I believe that the experience of a foreign internship in a developing country can be very personally enriching for anyone who is not afraid to step out of their comfort zone and into new, often unexpected situations.

💰And how to fund it?
What were your average monthly expenses during the internship?7000 CZK/month

Did the institution provide accommodation?yes

Did you have any unexpected expenses during the internship?no

Do you have any tips on how to save money during the internship?Find out prices from locals and don't be afraid to haggle.

🗺 Learn the ropes in a new city
How difficult was it for you to adjust to life abroad?no big deal

How well did you manage to communicate in English?neutral

How does public transport work in the city?I've seen better

And what about transport outside the city?I've seen better

Where to find connections? How to buy a ticket? There is no public transport in the place where the organisation is based in the form we are used to here. The main mode of transport is "piki piki" - motorbike taxis. If necessary, a reliable driver can be arranged in advance. Usually, however, it is enough to arrange someone who is nearby and negotiate a reasonable price with him.

Did you deal with any health issues during your stay?no

🤠Help create the perfect bucket list
What is a must-see in the city? The organization is based in a rural area where there are no "tourist attractions".

What are the must-visit trip destinations? There is a hotel resort in the nearby town where you can swim in the beautiful outdoor pool on your day off and recharge for the week ahead. On Saturdays, the local market is also held in the same town.

Share your best experience:I take away many beautiful experiences from Kariba Nyumbani. But most of them are not very exciting and are related to the small joys of everyday life.

💅A nugget of wisdom to make the life easier
Did you need to handle a visa?yes

Where can it be arranged?Right at the airport.

What is needed?50 USD, documents and contact details of the organization.

How long does it take approximately?A few minutes before you queue up at the counter.

How did you get to the place?Plane
Car

Is there anything to watch out for before the trip? Before the trip itself, it is necessary to plan all appropriate vaccinations in time (spacing between partial doses will prolong the overall process for quite a long time).

Can you pay by card?almost nowhere

What not to forget when packing? It is important to pack appropriate clothing (covered shoulders, knees, nothing tight, skirts/dresses are ideal for ladies), repellents with high DEET content, adapters for sockets, probiotics, vitamins and basic medicines. It's also good to pack some gifts for the kids and locals.

🥳Summary
Whew, what a ride! 😮‍💨 Thanks so much for taking the time to complete our survey and for sharing your unique experience. Just one last thing. 🙏 How would you summarize your trip in one or two sentences? Some moments are full of mud and crying. But when you are not afraid to embrace that muddy and snotty child, you fill even that moment with love.
