💼How-to: Interning abroad
How did you discover this internship opportunity?Other

Other - please specify:I contacted the institution during the writing of my bachelor's thesis, which was about the dialect of the region, which I continue in my master's thesis.

Can you describe the role you held during your internship? We could say in the position of an archivist and linguistic researcher.

What specific responsibilities and tasks did you do during your internship?I was working on an archive of recordings that the institution received as a gift from the Université rurale Bressane. I then used the archive to create linguistic maps that showed the zone of contact between two different languages. This is the basis for a future lecture at a meeting of regional languages in six months' time.

Did your tasks align with the pre-defined conditions?yes

Did the internship meet your expectations?yes

Did you apply any theory you learned at university during the internship?yes

If yes, can you provide a specific example? For example, phonological knowledge was very useful for me to better understand the pronunciation of a given dialect.

How well did you manage to communicate in a foreign language?perfectly

Did the institution have any special requirements?Technical knowledge (e.g., specific software skills)
Specific language skills

Do you have tips on how to make a great impression on the institution?Have an interest in regional French languages, speak French well, have an original idea that could advance their activities.

How competitive was the selection process? Did you have to go through an application procedure? In general, unfortunately, there is very little interest in regional languages in France, it's quite a specific topic. There was no competition. The only problem was that it's a very small institution, so you need a lot of trainee autonomy - the staff don't always have time to devote to you.

Why would you recommend students do an internship? It is a great experience that will open doors to your future professional life. Besides, having an internship in the French countryside is like something out of a fairy tale. I recommend it!

💰And how to fund it?
What were your average monthly expenses during the internship?12500 CZK/month

Did the institution provide accommodation?yes

Did you have any unexpected expenses during the internship?yes

If yes, what were they? The institution only provided me with accommodation for the week of the month that I was physically there. The rest of the time I had to arrange accommodation in Dijon, where I ran into a scam and lost 900 euros because of it.

Do you have any tips on how to save money during the internship?Shopping at Lidl, cooking for yourself, not drinking beer abroad - not good and expensive, having supportive parents and ideally a part-time job.
