How would you categorize your internship?Education

💼How-to: Interning abroad
How did you discover this internship opportunity?Recommendation from acquaintances
Field coordinator

Can you describe the role you held during your internship?Class teacher.

What specific responsibilities and tasks did you do during your internship?Teaching history and geography to 8th and 9th grade bilingual children.

Did your tasks align with the pre-defined conditions?yes

Did the internship meet your expectations?yes

Did you apply any theory you learned at university during the internship?yes

How well did you manage to communicate in a foreign language?almost no difficulties

Do you have tips on how to make a great impression on the institution? It is good to have experience with bilingual students, but it is not a requirement. It is also good to have a relationship with music education.

Why would you recommend students do an internship? Here you can try everything. You get a class that can be small class (combined classes). Communication with parents. Administration and documentation. Living in Rome. Experience the teaching staff with all the positives and negatives.

💰And how to fund it?
What were your average monthly expenses during the internship?12100 CZK/month

Did the institution provide accommodation?no

If not, how did you find it?Not directly, but the director gave me a contact for possible accommodation.

Did you have any unexpected expenses during the internship?no

Do you have any tips on how to save money during the internship? It depends on how much and what you buy. I averaged my 500 euros from my expenses. Sometimes there was more spending, sometimes less. There are cheap shops like Conad or for us the famous Lidl or Penny.

🗺 Learn the ropes in a new city
How difficult was it for you to adjust to life abroad?no problem at all

How well did you manage to communicate in English?neutral

How does public transport work in the city?I've seen better

And what about transport outside the city?mostly fine

Where to find connections? How to buy a ticket?I searched for public transport connections on Google maps. Reliable and good. But public transport in Rome is very difficult. The buses here run as they please. But they always get you to your destination. You just have to be patient at first.
I bought my tickets in the beginning on the Atac tap&go mobile app. A monthly ticket here is valid for a calendar month (from the 1st to the 30th/31st). You can buy the card at Atac kiosks (city transport), but I don't recommend that, or at selected newsagents (trial and error). Just apply for a Metrobus card and they will already know. Buying more months after that goes through the Atac website.

Did you deal with any health issues during your stay?no

🤠Help create the perfect bucket list
What is a must-see in the city?Definitely the Colosseum, Piazza Navona, Pantheon, di Trevi. You know them all. But I also really like the Villa Borghese park (the villa itself is amazing, there's a gallery there) and the park above Piazza del Popolo. Churches are also a must have (but there are a lot of them).

What are the must-visit trip destinations?A small town near Rome called Tivoli. I recommend the first Sunday of the month, when admission to the palace and gardens is free. Absolutely beautiful. Then there's Perugia and Assisi. Beautiful and lots of chocolate.

Share your best experience:Tivoli. A beautiful palace with a beautiful garden where you can spend several hours. The town is tiny with small streets. I went wherever my feet took me and some of the streets reminded me of Harry Potter's Cross Street. Very beautiful place. And of course not to forget the gelato, which is a must here in Italy.

💅A nugget of wisdom to make the life easier
Did you need to handle a visa?no

How did you get to the place?Plane
Train

Is there anything to watch out for before the trip? There are two airports in Rome. Fiumicino is bigger and the connections to the city are easier (choice of two trains). Ciampino airport is very small and the transport is not very good, but there are buses to the metro and then to the city centre.

Can you pay by card?everywhere

What not to forget when packing?Don't forget a food box. There are no lunches at school, so you have to cook or arrange for food otherwise.
I would say a tip, don't pack what you can buy here. For example, I didn't take toiletries, shampoo or shower gel. I saved space in my suitcase and knew I could buy it here.

🥳Summary
Whew, what a ride! 😮‍💨 Thanks so much for taking the time to complete our survey and for sharing your unique experience. Just one last thing. 🙏 How would you summarize your trip in one or two sentences? This internship was challenging, but it was full of experiences and food. After all, nothing is free. So get out there.
